There was a call for artists in the Post Standard Newspaper Sunday June 21, 2015 that my mother passed along to me (since I don't read the newspaper) and encouraged me to enter. So I did. The experience was like putting a gun to my head and just forcing myself to do it. I found it really hard to get started. I needed a concept to work from and so I took photos of pansies. The image that you see is the zoomed in detail of the center of the pansy. Even with a concept I found it hard to just start painting on the blank canvas. My initial attempt was haphazard and spastic, so I wound up gesso-ing over the first part (top right hand corner) that I had painted and painting it again after I had been working on it for a few days. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out and ever so happy I got it done and turned in by the competition deadline.
